Bamboozled: An Unexpected Bamboo Adventure

 An Unexpected Bamboo Adventure features eight larger-than-life bird sculptures made from bamboo. Far more than just an art exhibit, Bamboozled transforms the Garden’s 87 acres into a whimsical, interactive scavenger hunt. Guests will follow the melodic rustle and clatter of bamboo wind chimes as they search for eight monumental bamboo bird sculptures tucked throughout the Garden—each with a unique personality and story to tell. These larger-than-life creations are the work of renowned artist duo Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein, known collectively as The Myth Makers. Wreath Making

It’s time to deck the halls—and with this workshop, you’ll get to bring a piece of the Garden home with you to do it! For our fourth annual Wreath Making Workshop, you’ll sip on apple cider (or spike it for extra fun) while creating your own festive wreath. Using noble and cedar cuttings, accent plants from the Garden, and cheerful ribbon, each wreath is a unique reflection of the season—and a keepsake you can treasure all year long. Craft, laugh, and make memories with friends and family while learning simple tips to keep your wreath fresh and beautiful throughout the holidays.

Celebrate the fall season at Cozy Crafting: DIY Cornucopia! In this festive hands-on workshop, you’ll fill your own cornucopia with fresh plant material from the Garden, then add decorative touches like ribbon, gourds, and seed pods to create a one-of-a-kind holiday centerpiece. As you craft, our instructor will share the fascinating origins of the cornucopia, fun plant facts, and insider tips to keep your arrangement looking festive all season long. Each guest will enjoy an apple cider—spiked if you’d like some extra holiday cheer—as you craft a centerpiece that could become a cherished yearly tradition.

Parent and Me: Butterflies 101

Calling all junior entomologists to discover and learn about the Tropical Butterflies visiting our SOAR Pavilion! Guests will get an up close and personal guided experience, starting at our Emergence Chamber Window, through our Host and Nectar Garden, and finishing up in our Pavilion with hundreds of tropical butterflies.  Kids will  create their own identification guide that you can use at South Coast Botanic Garden and even their own backyard!  Each child will use a magnifying glass, notebook, pencil, and crayons to record their findings. All supplies needed will be provided. This class will take place in rain or shine! Price includes General Garden Admission, admission into SOAR and the class. All class participants (adults and children) require a ticket. 

This workshop is recommended for ages 5 and up!

Meet our tropical butterflies in their enclosed habitat.

 This is your additional ticket to go into the butterfly pavilion. Please check the day and time to make sure it is coordinated with your general admission ticket. Your SOAR ticket time is the time you enter the pavilion. You can arrive at the host and nectar garden up to 10 minutes early to ensure you see the native butterflies and caterpillars outside of the pavilion. If you desire a different date and time, click on "Select other dates" and choose a new date and time.

Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors

Grab your boarding pass for the Pangea Express for a roaring expedition! This ticket includes General Garden Admission and an exclusive guided tour of Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors. This exhibit features 13 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, which you’ll be introduced to while seated on the non-stop Pangea Express.

Parent & Me: DIY Fossils

Dig into dino-sized fun with your little one in this interactive parent-child workshop! Together, you’ll stamp dinosaur figurines and plant clippings into clay to create your very own DIY fossils. Afterwards, each child will take their creation home to dry—a perfect keepsake! Or make a “great impression” on your friends and family this holiday season and turn them into ornaments! Along the way, you’ll discover what it means to be a “living fossil” and how plants connect to our Dinosaurs Around the World exhibit. To make the day extra cozy, every participant will enjoy a complimentary hot chocolate while crafting.

Paper Bead Ornaments

This holiday season, trade in the store-bought décor for something truly personal—handmade paper bead ornaments! In this festive workshop, you’ll learn how to repurpose leftover wrapping paper into colorful paper beads, then make your own festive ornaments to take home. To make each one extra special, we’ll have additional charms so you can create a keepsake and even start a yearly tradition of making handmade ornaments at the Garden. With holiday music, hot chocolate (and Bailey’s, if you’re over 21), and plenty of creativity, this workshop is the perfect way to celebrate the season with friends and family.
