Lunar New Year Festival at South Coast Botanic Garden

January 28 and 29, 10-4 pm

Also known as the “Spring Festival," Lunar New Year is a traditional celebration that commemorates the transition of one Chinese zodiac sign to another. Hosted in many cultures worldwide, the festivities also help to ensure the coming of a strong harvest and lush blooming spring.

Our unique festival will position the winter blooms and green foliage as a picture-perfect backdrop to usher in the year of the rabbit, complete with red lanterns and festive activities. Experiences will include Chinese zodiac scroll making, paper lantern decorating, Chinese paper cutting, Chinese game booths, a Chinese calligraphy artist demonstration and storytelling.

Live performances will feature lion dancers and an interactive martial arts demonstration that will encourage guests to participate on our dancefloor. A self-guided garden walk in the winter air will encourage guests to find our resident rabbits (cotton tails).

Dottie's concession stand will be open with a Dim Sum box, wonton soup bowl and Chinese pastries, in addition to regular menu items. In the event of rain, performances and activities will move indoors.
